Services for Volunteers
Business Volunteers Unlimited (BVU) is the primary resource for recruiting, developing and organizing community and business volunteers in the Greater Baltimore area. Through BVU’s Volunteer Central, individuals can find opportunities to lend their time and talent to organizations that are working to improve the community.
What is Volunteering?
Volunteering is the practice of people working on behalf of others without being motivated by financial or material gain.

Different Types of Volunteering
- Direct Service: This includes a variety of volunteer opportunities that support an organization in delivering services and fulfilling its mission.
Examples include:
- Prepare and/or serve meals
- Tutor or mentor at a school
- Help write a resume or prepare for interview
- Serve as a docent at a museum
- Garden and plant at a park or arboretum
- Skilled or Professional: Lend your skills and expertise to help an organization with operational needs.
Examples include:
- Assist with human resources: create an employee manual, help with performance management;
- Provide financial support: assist with budget planning or book keeping, help prepare for an audit;
- Support the organization’s strategic planning or marketing efforts
- Nonprofit Board: The Board of Directors of a nonprofit is a governing body that helps to set the organization’s mission, raise funds, provide financial and legal oversight, plan for the future, and hire and evaluate the chief executive.
