On October 20, 2010 a group of 19 employees from Weyrich, Cronin & Sorra (WC&S) volunteered their time at the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy. These parties were brought together for this volunteer event with the help of Business Volunteers Unlimited (BVU).
Program Director of Gunpowder Valley Conservancy, Peggy Perry led the group of CPAs, partners, administrative staff and accountants to the 20 acre Dulaney Branch tree planting site, which is home to about 10,000 trees. The volunteers worked very diligently throughout the day and maintained 1,300 trees. The tree maintenance included pruning, removing shelters from mature trees, replacing shelters on smaller trees and removing invasive plants. The eager volunteers also checked for dead trees and flagged where new trees are to be planted. The Gunpowder Valley Conservancy’s staff was excited to have had the human power to manage trees on such a large scale. “We simply cannot do the critical and large amount of restoration work without the help of great volunteer groups like the team from WC&S. We are very grateful and so are the trees!" explained Peggy. The volunteers removed 800 pounds of invasive plants from trees covering more than six acres. This was a labor intensive job and a huge help to prepare for the Conservancy’s next big tree planting on November 6th.
Peggy describes the day of service as “Fantastic!” and she would love to work with the WC&S volunteers again. “They were enthusiastic, hard workers, and truly cared about the survival of the trees. We are so appreciative of good people like these”. Through a partnership with BVU, WC&S employees were surveyed earlier this year to help identify their volunteer interests and plan a day of volunteerism. “The survey results indicated a strong desire to work on projects involving the environment, so a day helping the GVC was a perfect fit,” said Carol Frontera, Marketing Coordinator at WC&S. “The people from GVC are so dedicated and informative, I think we all learned a lot and left feeling good about our involvement.” Everyone at the Business Volunteers Unlimited & Gunpowder Valley Conservancy is appreciative of WC&S’s hard work and WC&S is delighted to have contributed to such a great cause.
BVU inspires volunteerism by connecting motivated people and businesses with the nonprofits and communities that need them most. BVU serves as the primary resource for recruiting, developing and organizing volunteers in the Greater Baltimore area.
