"Appreciation in any form at any time brightens anyone's existence."
- Ruth Stafford Peale

A Day of Service rarely ever lasts only a “day” for SC&H Group.  It came as no surprise to hear that the accounting firm has formed yet another long term partnership with a nonprofit organization they were introduced to through BVU’s Days of Service Program.  SC&H Group’s newest nonprofit partnership began on June 25th, 2010 when SC&H Group hosted their 4th Annual Day of Service with the support of BVU.  The SC&H Group offices in Sparks, MD and McLean, VA closed to give all firm employees the opportunity to work on community projects throughout the Baltimore and Washington areas. The firm sent volunteers out to assist ten different organizations in their service endeavors; these include organizations focused on humanitarian efforts, animal rescue, education and the environment.

The mission of one organization, The Baltimore Station, particularly resonated with SC&H Group’s volunteers led by Managing Director, Ron Causey.  This residential therapeutic community for men, many of whom are veterans recovering from addiction, welcomed SC&H Group with open arms when the volunteers joined them for a workshop featuring mock interviews and discussion about topics related to personal presentation and job skills.  This meeting marked the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

"Enthusiasm is contagious. Start an epidemic."
- Bob Moawad

A service project at The Baltimore Station is now a quarterly tradition for SC&H Group.  Led by Caroline Miner, Senior Associate for SC&H Group’s State and Local Tax Practice, a team of 35 employees coordinate a quarterly get-together at The Baltimore Station at which staff members representing every level within the company participate to prepare, serve and enjoy dinner with the residents.  The first of these quarterly meals was enjoyed in November when volunteers bought, prepared and served a delicious steak dinner for the residents.  As is the Baltimore Station’s policy, once their work was done the volunteers took their seats in the dining room and enjoyed the meal alongside the residents.

Individual staff members have also gone above and beyond to volunteer their professional skills and personal time in support of The Baltimore Station’s mission.  Scott Walton, Accountant at SC&H Group, has since volunteered at The Baltimore Station with his family to serve breakfast to the residents on multiple occasions, including Christmas Eve.  A team of SC&H Group employees skilled in the field of Information Technology have undertaken a pro-bono project that will improve the capabilities of The Baltimore Station’s internal network.  This team is led by Mike Hull, Chief Information Officer at SC&H Group.  Ebony Hypolite, a member of SCH&H Group’s Business Performance Management group, has also made an especially poignant connection with The Baltimore Station beyond her participation in days of service projects.  She has recently been elected to serve on The Baltimore Station’s Board of Directors.  Ms. Hypolite completed BVU’s Board Leadership Program through which she was able to develop her leadership and management skills and was also a participant in BVU’s Board Diversity Initiative.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
- Margaret Mead

According to Ron Causey, Managing Director of SC&H Group, “community service is an integral part of what SC&H is about.  The Baltimore Station’s work related to substance abuse recovery assistance, mostly for veterans, provides an outstanding outlet for our people to give of themselves.”
