SC&H Group Volunteers Give Back to the Community with 5th Annual Day of Service

back-river-4.jpgOn June 24th, approximately 140 employees of SC&H Group participated in the company’s annual day of service at various Maryland area nonprofits. The SC&H volunteers were organized into eight groups that served the Commodore John Rogers Elementary School, Back River Restoration Committee, Maryland SPCA, Hampden Family Center, Great Kids Farm, Alternative House and The Baltimore Station.

Six SC&H volunteers traveled to the BARCS facility in Baltimore. In four hours, the volunteers applied a new coat of paint to the cat house, mopped the building’s floors, and cleaned the grounds.

At the John Rogers Elementary School, 23 SC&H volunteers worked to beautify the campus and to organize donated books. Those assigned to the beautification of the campus painted steps and created outdoor word murals that are intended to aid younger students with reading. Others were tasked with labeling the donated books with appropriate grade number and Lexile number, painstaking work that was especially helpful because it otherwise would have occupied the school’s regular volunteer for a long time. Noah Smock, the Director of Community Outreach & Volunteer Programs at the Living Classrooms Foundation, was very appreciative of SC&H’s assistance, saying, “[SC&H] made a big impact in a short time.”

Another team of SC&H employees served as trash collectors as they retrieved paper, bottles, tires, water skis, and lumber from a beach on the Back River. After two and a half hours of work, the group had accumulated some two and a half tons of debris. The efficiency of their work impressed the Back River Restoration Committee, which asked that the SC&H employees return to the Back River next year.

baltimore-station-2.jpgA fourth SC&H group traveled to the Maryland SPCA, where most workers manicured the SPCA grounds while the remaining volunteers worked in the kennel. The visit occurred on the same day as the SPCA’s annual Wine and Wag event, and SC&H volunteers erected tents, set up tables, and transported beverages to the location of the fundraiser. The efforts of the SC&H team brought about a noticeable improvement in the condition of the SPCA grounds and earned the praise of SPCA Volunteer Manager Katie Flory, who said to the SC&H workers, “I look forward to your visit each year as you are very hard working. We would have never been able to do what we did to get ready for the Wine and Wag without your help.”

SC&H workers at the Hampden Family Center painted offices, tended to the garden, and cleaned the facility’s basement. Their assistance permitted Lisa Ghinger, the Executive Director of the Family Center, to attend to families at the Center. Lisa said, “[The SC&H workers] were just terrific. [They] are welcome back anytime. [They] were a tremendous help.”

A group of nine SC&H employees tended to the grounds of the Great Kids Farm in Catonsville. Despite the heat and humidity, the volunteers combated weed growth by depositing mulch around the farm’s fences and worked diligently in the wheat fields. The SC&H workers collected multiple large containers of wheat, which was then packaged for sale at an area farmer’s market. Farm Manager Greg Strella praised the work of the SC&H team. Speaking to the volunteers, he said, “We are deeply energized by your ongoing investment here. We count you all as members of our Great Kids Farm community [and…] we will continue to welcome your partnership anytime.”

spca2-low.jpgThe final SC&H volunteer group provided its service at The Baltimore Station, which facilitates the transition of poor, homeless, or substance-abusing men to independent living. 21 SC&H employees interacted with the residents of The Baltimore Station for three and half hours, playing games, singing songs, writing skits and poems, and offering life and professional skills. Al Phillips, the Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator at The Baltimore Station, said of the discourse between the SC&H volunteers and the residents of the Station, “You can’t buy this kind of interaction.”
