Pii Volunteers Put the “Elf” in Selfless

Steve and Abbie King at Elf Night '10

Steve King, Senior Vice President at Pii, is someone BVU likes to call a “veteran elf.” On December 16th, 2011, Steve volunteered for his third consecutive year for BVU’s Elf Night, a holiday volunteer event in partnership with The Salvation Army. Over the last few years Steve and his daughter Abbie have become the poster elves of Elf Night. They are a fantastic representation of this volunteer tradition that is all about volunteers of all ages coming together in the spirit of the season; they also happen to be very photogenic!  This past Elf Night, BVU was especially excited to welcome eight of Steve’s colleagues from his company, Pii, a pharmaceutical manufacturing company based in Hunt Valley.

It came as no surprise to BVU and Salvation Army staff that Steve’s team was just as enthusiastic and hard-working as he and Abbie are each year.  Not only did the Pii team demonstrate a tremendous commitment to the Angel Tree Program during Elf Night, their generosity far surpassed anyone’s expectations.  Moved by the number of families in need of toys and clothing for their children, the Pii team, led by Tony Horton, Vice President of Quality Assurance, considered their volunteer experience a call to action. After completing their volunteer shift, Tony and his team took an inventory of the number of clothing item requests that would not be fulfilled by the warehouse’s current stock of donations. He rallied his team and collected the funds to purchase these hundreds of items. That very evening he drove home to pick up his wife and went shopping.

A few hours and over $1500 later, Tony and his wife came home with 43 pairs of shoes, 41 pairs of pants, 70 shirts, over 100 pairs of socks and a dozen hats to deliver to The Salvation Army’s warehouse. After his shopping marathon, Tony Horton described his feeling as “the best tired I’ve felt in a long time.”

BVU is so proud to share this story on the transformative power of volunteerism and honored to call the good people of Pii part of our corporate community.
