Hodes, Pessin, and Katz Employee Volunteers “Spruce Up” Towson’s Talmar Gardens

hpk-03126.jpgEmployees of the Baltimore-based legal group Hodes, Pessin, and Katz, P.A. (HPK) had conducted office food and clothes drives, but wished to become more directly involved in the community. Managing Director Drake Zaharris said, however, that employees were restricted by their busy schedules. He said that HPK employees were asking, “Can we find a way to get out into the community?”

hpk-03127.jpgBusiness Volunteers Unlimited (BVU) assisted HPK in doing just that.  On June 17th, BVU organized a day of service at the Talmar Gardens and Horticultural Center in Towson. The group worked at Talmar from nine in the morning until two in the afternoon and tackled weeding, site beautification, and shed maintenance. According to Drake, the experience helped develop camaraderie among the HPK team.  He said, “It’s a good opportunity to get out of the office and to get to know the staff better.” Alex Moylan, an HPK associate who participated in the service day, agreed, saying, “I got to talk to people I don’t normally see and learn about things I never knew before.”

hpk-03142.jpgThe employees appreciated the positive community impact of the service day. HPK stresses the importance of supporting the community, and the group’s involvement at Talmar was employee-driven. Drake said, “This service day came about because the staff wanted to do something. They wanted to give back. It’s important to do this to get a sense of the community.” Lynn Reichhelm, a paralegal with HPK, also testified to the desire of HPK employees to work in the community. “We wanted to get out in the community and build relationships with local nonprofits. We would like to do something like this regularly,” Lynn said.
