BVU Business Members Join the United We Serve Initiative

Baltimore, Maryland (July 2009) – With the assistance of Business Volunteers Unlimited (BVU), greater Baltimore businesses are taking part of the national United We Serve Initiative, a national effort launched by President Obama to engage more Americans in serving their communities this summer.

Since the start of the summer, BVU has helped AB Realty, Venable LLP, Katz Abosch and Stout Causey and Horning Group (SC&H Group) mobilize more than 400 employees to support nonprofit organizations. The contribution of these employees totals approximately 2,000 volunteer hours valued at $42,525.

SC&H Group closed its offices for a day of service, allowing more than 140 of its employees to volunteer at the following organizations: Art with a Heart, Living Classrooms, Friends of Patapsco Valley, MD SPCA, The Loading Dock, Villa Maria Continuum, Great Kids Farm, BARCS, Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue and Cylburn Arboretum.

SC&H Group volunteers participated in a mix of indoor and outdoor projects in which they helped set up for a fundraising event; removed an estimated 2,530 pounds of trash from the Patapsco River; cleared fields to build farming structures and planting areas; sorted donated goods; painted an old wooden storage shed, unloaded 200 bales of hay and cleared invasive plants from public gardens.

Katz Abosch closed its Timonium, Columbia and Bel Air offices for its annual community service day, allowing nearly 100 employees to volunteer at the following organizations: Baltimore County Humane Society, The Loading Dock, Parks and People Foundation, Herring Run Watershed, Maryland Food Bank, Comprehensive Housing Assistance, Inc. (CHAI).

Katz volunteers provided numerous services including: helping sort, package and process 3,750 pounds of food which equates to 3,024 meals; set up displays, arrange and sort merchandise; performed home maintenance for senior citizens; removed invasive plants and assisted with event preparation and clean up.

AB Realty employees participated in many projects at the SEED School of Maryland to help teachers prepare for the upcoming school year by labeling and organizing textbooks; assisting the school with their parent engagement tactics; and beautifying the campus to provide a comfortable environment for the students as this is the first away-from-home experience for many of them.

Lastly, fifteen Venable LLP volunteers spent their afternoon at Druid Hill Park mulching a total of 45 trees, as well as removing invasive plants and weeds.

“We all know that volunteering can be personally rewarding, but this summer’s corporate days of service illustrate exactly how great an impact organized volunteer projects can have on our community,” said BVU executive director Kelly Hodge-Williams.
