Baltimore, MD April 2008 — In partnership with Business Volunteers Unlimited Maryland (BVU), Domino Sugar, participated in a volunteer day of service to clear debris and restore the habitat of local marine wildlife at the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine.
For four hours, 22 Domino Sugar volunteers worked side-by-side with over 120 other volunteers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Legg Mason and the Aquarium Conservation Team (ACT!) removed over 9,000 pieces of marine debris and built a native garden that will become a habitat for migratory birds and other local wildlife.
“The employees from Domino Sugar were dedicated and passionate about cleaning up the shore around Fort McHenry, as a neighbor and as a citizen of the city. Domino took great pride in the work that they did to benefit the community as a whole.” Nan Bambara, BVU’s Director of Business Services.
Through this volunteer event, BVU was able to channel a total of 572 hours of labor, amounting to over $11,500 in labor cost* to Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine. This community treasure is an important refuge for many species of wildlife; however, years of neglect left the site choked with debris. Each year, coastal communities spend millions of dollars trying to prevent and remove debris washing up on their shorelines. By removing debris, volunteers made the area safer and cleaner for people, animals, and navigation.
For Domino Employees, the Fort McHenry Day of Service launched their formal partnership with BVU. Domino’s commitment to creating a positive change in their neighborhood is evidence of their effort to strategically harness the power of its employees to benefit the community in which they operate and strengthen teamwork.
“Now more than ever, businesses are realizing that their employees are a huge untapped asset and resource to enhance their community engagement. And BVU is the organization to help them create a greater impact in the community for the greater good.” Nan Bambara, BVU’s Director of Business Services.
